Janelle Monáe - “Oh, Maker”

Wow, can somebody PLEASE kick me for waiting this long to start listening to Janelle Monáe? The ArchAndroid is collectively one of the best albums I’ve heard in the last five years; I can’t believe I’ve survived this long without having this amazing album in my life and music library. It’s loaded with 5-star songs, including “Cold War”, “Wondaland”, “Locked Inside”, “57821”, and the obvious “Tightrope.” Not to mention that Janelle herself seems like a total sweetheart with an intellect to match; it was actually an article about why she still continues to wear her trademark uniform that inspired me to check out ArchAndroid in the first place. She speaks (and sings) with such poise and conviction, it’s a comfort to see brilliant women like her in the spotlight of what can be such a shallow industry.

I want to be clear young girls, I didn’t have to change who I was to become a Covergirl, I didn’t have to become perfect because I’ve learned through my journey that perfection is the often the enemy of greatness. Embrace what makes you unique, even if it makes other uncomfortable.

Slightly confusing title, more than slightly infectious song. I know a lot of people see Aaliyah in a song title and instinctively assume the track has some previously unheard of vocals or a sample of the late, great, songstress, but alas, The Queen of The Damned is nowhere to be heard on the UK singer Katy B’s song. It’s more of a love letter of sorts to the namesakes… something.

I’ll level with you, I’m not all that sure whats happening in the song. It’s one of those pop songs with lyrics that don’t quite make sense at first. I say at first because I hope to one day understand the story that went into this amazing song, but for now I’ll just have to settle for having really great night-driving music.

Mystery Jets have always found a way of creeping into different areas of my life. They played in my little hometown, made friends with some of my friends, became increasingly infectious on the radio, took over the London music scene when I moved there, they supported Brandon Flowers when I saw him last year and became an integral part of my American road-trip last Summer. In two days I am moving back to London and it seems only perfect that I should choose Mystery Jets to accompany me.

If I only knew your name I’d go from door to door
Searching all the crowded streets for the face that I once saw

Young Love is one of my favourite songs of any band. And yes, that is Laura Marling on the chorus!

Dan Mangan - Robots

I’ll be honest with you. I’m not the biggest fan of the folk sound. However, Dan Mangan might just change that for me. There’s something about his music that I enjoy. Maybe it’s his gravelly voice. Maybe it’s his beard. I have no idea. I picked this song because I really liked the instrumentation backing up Mangan’s voice. In addition to the usual drumset, guitar and piano, there’s also trumpets, banjo, and trombone. I think I’ll always be a sucker for wind instruments in non-classical music.

Mangan comes from Smithers, British Columbia and the rest of Nice, Nice, Very Nice has very similar feel to Robots. The other songs on the album have interesting instrumentation as well and I highly recommend it.

So, I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do and remember, robots need love too.

I originally came here to post a Buena Vista Social Club song and after listening to their discography today I couldn’t decide. After a while searching around I was lead to the Rhythm Del Mundo compilations. The last song on the ‘Classics’ album was Rodrigo y Gabriela’s cover of Stairway to Heaven. Their take on this song is just phenomenal. It’s always tough to take such an iconic song and try to make it your own but they exceed with flying colors. I’d expect no less from them.
